Instagram Image Size Guide 2020

Size matters – and that’s a fact on Instagram. A few years ago it was pretty easy to choose a picture or video for your next post. Instagram allowed only one orientation format and that’s it, but over the years the addition of Instagram Stories, IGTV, Instagram Live, Landscape and Portrait posts made it a little difficult to choose the right format. Our “Instagram Image Size Guide 2020” will help you to choose the right Image size and make your post stand out on Instagram.

Instagram Image Size & Aspect Ratio

There 2 main points to keep in mind before you creating a new post: the image size and the aspect ratio.

The aspect ratio is the width of a picture in relation to the height. So, if someone is talking about 1:1, 9:16 or 4:5 they are talking about the aspect ratio. The first number represent the width and the second one the height. Each format has its own aspect ratio on Instagram, but we will get into details later.

The Image Size refers to the number of pixels that make up a picture (not to confound with the file-size of an image).

Generally, Instagram supports videos and photos with a width between 320px and 1080px. Everything below will get enlarge to a width of 320px and everything above will get size down to 1080px by Instagram.

Instagram automatically compress videos and photos, but that does not mean size doesn’t matter. As a matter of fact, you should always share high-resolution images! Even when Instagram is compressing the resolution of your post, the quality of your image will not get affected too much.

Interesting fact: Your videos and photos get stored in multiple sizes by Instagram in order to get properly displayed on the different devices.

Photo Posts – Instagram Image Size 2020

Since Instagram introduced vertical and horizontal posts back in 2015, you have the chance to change the style of your posts on Instagram. Sometimes a portrait photo can contain far more information than a simple square image.  Let’s get into the details!

Instagram Profile Image Size

As we all know right next after your username your profile picture is your personal trademark on Instagram. Yes, you heard us, even with this small amount of space you can make the difference with the right Profile Image.

Teambladi Advice: Use the same profile image on every social network you are using, that is very important for the overall recognition of your brand or business (same goes for influencers and entrepreneurs.).

Most of the time people do not remember names but recognize profile images they have seen before.

Instagram Profile Image Size Chart:

Optimum size: 110px x 110px.

Maximum resolution: 1080px x 1080px

Teambladi Recommendation: 2000px x 2000px

Why do we recommend 2000px x 2000px? It is easier to create one High-Resolution Profile Picture and use it for every of your Social Networks. The high resolution is justified with the intention to be prepared for the case if one Social Network allows a higher resolution than the Maximum of Instagram.

Instagram Image Size Guide 2020 - Square Image

Instagram Square Image – Aspect Ratio 1:1

Square Image Size

The Square Image is still one of the most popular choices on Instagram. Important to note is, that you always need an aspect ratio of 1:1, because everything above gets cropped away (if you do not prepare your image correctly, Instagram gives you some possibilities to zoom in or out of a picture before posting it, but we would not recommend you to rely on that!)

Instagram Square Image Size Chart:

Optimum Size: 600px x 600px

Maximum resolution: 1080px x 1080px

Teambladi Recommendation: 3000px x 3000px

We personally use for our feed square posts a resolution of 3000px x 3000px. After trying different sizes, we personally think this is the best way to go (Also we have the possibility to share the Image on our other Social Networks with a higher resolution – again, try to think outside the box)

Instagram Image Size Guide 2020 - Landscape Image

Instagram Landscape – Aspect Ratio 1.91:1 or 16:9

Instagram Horizontal Image Size – Landscape

Horizontal Images on Instagram have an aspect ratio of 1.91:1 and go up till 16:9. As you can see, they are a little tricky to handle. We recommend to go never below the height of 1080px in order to have a decent quality.

Instagram Horizontal Image Size Chart

Optimum Size: 600px x 400px

Maximum resolution: 1080px x 566px

Teambladi Recommendation: 3200px x 1800px

We recommend a horizontal Image Size of 3200px x 1800px, because the compressed version still looks pretty sharp and you still have the possibility to share your Image on other platforms with a sick quality.

Instagram Image Size Guide 2020 - Portait Image

Instagram Portrait – Aspect Ratio 4:5

Instagram Vertical Image Size – Portrait

The aspect ratio of vertical images aka portraits is 4:5. Most of the time we personally use portraits. For clothing brands and Influencer posts with focus on certain items or details they are your best buddies on Instagram. Be aware if you use anything else than the 4:5 ratio Instagram will crop your photo.

Instagram Image Size Guide 2020 - Instagram Story

Instagram Story Fullscreen

Instagram Stories are a must if you really want to bring your social media game onto the next level. People love to swipe through some good Stories and a it is good way to attract people to follow you.

Instagram Stories do not really have a strict size specification, Everything between the aspect ratio 1.91:1 and 9:16 can be used for your Stories (You can always resize it before posting it. Just use to fingers and zoom in and out to determine your image or video size).

In order to perfectly use the space Instagram is offering you we recommend to use an aspect ratio of 9:16 to cover the full screen. A Story has a length of 15 seconds, so if you have a video longer than 15 seconds, Instagram splits it into multiple Stories.

Optimum Size: 1080px x 1920px

Aspect Ratio: 9:16

Length: between 1 – 15 seconds

IMPORTANT: Some smartphones like the Huawei Mate 20 Pro have a problem to display the Story correctly because their Display ratio is for example 19,5:8. If you post an Instagram Story on a smartphone with a different display ratio than 9:16 the Story can look strange on other Phones. Beware of that and don’t use the whole 9:16 image or video. Zoom-out a little bit on those devices in order to reduce the difference to a minimum. You can try to turn the “Notch mode” off but that will not solve your problem completely.
