Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu builds discipline, confidence and physical literacy in kids faster than almost any other sport. The gear setup is simple - here is exactly what you need and what to look for.

The starter kit for kids No-Gi
The kit for kids No-Gi is identical in function to adult No-Gi - just sized for a smaller body.
1. A kids rashguard. Protects skin from the mat, manages sweat and is required at most academies for No-Gi. Same compression fit and construction as adult rashguards, adapted for kids proportions. See our Kids BJJ Rashguards.
2. Kids grappling shorts. Flexible, comfortable, no zippers or pockets. See our Kids Grappling Shorts and Kids MMA Shorts for options.
Those two items are everything needed for the first class. Add a mouthguard from session one - kids can receive accidental contact during drilling and sparring.
Sizing for growing kids
The biggest mistake parents make is buying too large, thinking the kid will grow into it. A rashguard two sizes too big creates loose fabric that training partners grab - frustrating for a young grappler and harder to move in.
Size for a snug current fit. Measure the child's chest (widest point) and weight, not just height. Expect to replace gear as they grow, every 6-12 months at the correct fit.

Hygiene - more important for kids than adults
Children share surfaces and are less careful about hygiene than adults. Mat infections - ringworm, staph, impetigo - spread quickly. A rashguard reduces skin exposure significantly. Where the academy allows it, spats add another layer of protection.
Wash their kit after every single session: cold water (max 30°C), inside-out, no fabric softener, hang dry. Build the routine from day one.
What to add after the first month
- A second rashguard: Train multiple times a week and one never fully dries. Two rotates cleanly.
- Spats: Skin protection and warmth - important for kids on cold mats.

What age can kids start BJJ?
Most academies accept kids from age 4-5 for beginner classes. Gear sizing typically starts from age 4 up through 12-14, at which point adult XS or S may fit. Always check the product size chart before ordering.
Do kids need IBJJF-coloured rashguards?
For regular training, no. For IBJJF-sanctioned kids tournaments, the same colour rules apply as adults. Check your event rules. Most local kids tournaments do not enforce belt-colour rashguards.
How often should kids BJJ gear be washed?
After every single session without exception. Kids do not always notice or flag a smell - build the cold wash and hang dry routine from day one and it becomes automatic.
