Getting disqualified at weigh-in before you ever step on the mat is one of the most preventable competition mistakes. Here is the full breakdown of what IBJJF actually requires.
The belt colour rule
In IBJJF No-Gi divisions, your rashguard colour must predominantly match your belt rank. This is the rule that catches the most competitors off guard - because it is specific, not just "any dark colour" or "team colours."

The rashguard must be predominantly the rank colour. Some black or white contrast is allowed. A 50/50 split may be rejected depending on the referee. When in doubt, aim for more than 70% your rank colour.
Shorts requirements

Spats in competition
Spats are permitted under grappling shorts. Like the rashguard, they should match belt rank when worn in competition. Short spats (compression shorts) are also permitted under grappling shorts.
Long sleeve vs short sleeve
Both are legal under IBJJF in all divisions. Long sleeve rashguards provide more skin coverage and are legal everywhere short sleeve is. Most competitors choose based on personal preference for shoulder mobility vs. coverage.

Can I wear a black rashguard at any belt level?
For black belt and white belt divisions, yes. For blue, purple and brown belt No-Gi divisions, a plain black rashguard may not be legal. Some events allow black as a secondary option - others are strict. When in doubt, wear your belt colour.
What happens if my rashguard fails gear inspection?
You will not be allowed to compete in that division. Some events have spare gear available to borrow; most do not. Pack a backup rashguard in the correct colour and you will never face this problem.
Are team-branded rashguards allowed in IBJJF?
Yes, as long as the predominant colour matches your belt rank. Team logos and branding are permitted - the colour is what matters, not the branding.
